Key Assessment Issue Addressed:

Communication, qualitative scientific process: plant cell and tissue recognition using microscopy

Informal oral presentations performed to a small group are opportunities for students to gain confidence while displaying their practical skills and their ability to articulate the information found. Students are assigned a certain plant species and asked to consolidate all their plant anatomy knowledge from the semester with regard to this one species. They have to make a hand section and use their knowledge of a microscope to interpret and convey what they have found to the class using diagrams and spoken explanations.

Evidence of the Initiative's Effectiveness:

Students express their appreciation of this experience not only because it is good practice for their practical examination but also because they can see how the course structure has assisted them in building and integrating their knowledge of how plants are put together and how they work.
